ITO JOYOATMOJO ABOUT IDENTITY NOMADS

What inspired you to create your work for Identity Nomads?

I am fascinated by the extraordinary variety and scope of our daily choices when it comes to food! Exotic or homegrown, only our taste buds decide what culture we want to belong to that day.

Statement

Whenever I reflect on life, I feel the urge to toss away my passport
.
Borders often divide, rather than unite.
The geography of territories is distressing, but I am confident that – with a little effort – we can find a way to positivedeal with these issues to our mutual benefit.

ITO’S WORK

Ito was born and raised in Jakarta.
As a child he liked to paint and eventually studied art formally by entering the Indonesian Art School (Sekolah Seni Rupa Indonesia) in Jogyakarta in 1973. (Majoring in fine arts).
From 1977 he continued his art education at the Jakarta Art Academy (LPKJ) then the Jakarta Art Instituteor IKJ.
In his work Ito started to focus on the creative process, as opposed to the product which lead him away from a product-oriented work ethic. By emphasizing the dynamics, the product loses its significance and can be destroyed which led to his practice to paintover artworks after an exhibition. His exploration of the visual rhythm continued in the following exhibitions, until 1986.
In 1987, Ito moved to Europe and has lived in Switzerland ever since.
The change of environment and circumstances has influenced his work substantially and prompted his interest in identity.
